What is a D4 PVA wood glue?

A simple guide as to what a D4 PVA wood adhesive is, what it can bond, and how to use it.

WHAT IS D4 PVA ADHESIVE?

(also known as pva glue, white wood glue etc)

PVA adhesives, such as Woodstikk® D4 PVA, are water based adhesives based on Poly Vinyl Acetate (PVA). As they are one component, meaning no mixing required, and water based, so relatively safe to use, PVA wood adhesives.

The D4 prefix denotes the level of water resistance that the adhesive has. There are four levels of water and weather resistance, D1, D2, D3 and D4. D4 is the highest performing version. See here for more detailed information as to the differences.

If you don’t need such a high performing, water resistant adhesive, you can use a D3 grade instead, such as Woodstikk D3 PVA.

WHAT DOES D4 PVA WOOD GLUE BOND?

Woodstikk® D4 PVA Adhesive can be used to bond all types of wood in many different applications but because it has a high water resistance, it is often used for the most demanding applications where the piece being bonded is going to be outside or open to the elements. Some applications include

  • Laminate
  • Backed veneer
  • Timber
  • MDF
  • Plywood
  • Doors
  • Windows
  • Gates
  • Garden furniture

As it performs so well when bonding wood, Woodstikk® D4 PVA Adhesive is well proven and established in a wide cross-section of industries which process timber such as a laminating, veneering, shop fitting, kitchen fitting, furniture manufacturing, and general repairs. Woodstikk® D4 PVA Adhesive is easy to apply and has an open time of 20 – 30 minutes depending on temperature and humidity of the substrates and atmospheric conditions.

Ensure that the surfaces to be bonded are smooth, clean and free from dust or other deposits. Wood, plywood, laminated plastics should be of uniform thickness. Some dense hardwoods may require sanding before bonding. For best results the moisture contents of the surfaces to be bonded should be in the range of 7 – 13%, but when pressing at temperatures above 105°C, moisture content should not exceed 10%. Moisture content variation between adjacent components should not be > 3%.

Woodstikk D4 PVA should be applied evenly to one substrate using a brush, hand roller or mechanical roller. Adhesive coverage between 80 and 180g sq/m are suitable depending on the surfaces to be bonded. When bonding different timbers, such as teak and high-density hardwoods, the adhesive should be applied to both surfaces of the joint. It should be noted that adhesive spread has considerable influence on both assembly and setting times.

HOW DO I STOP GLUE SHOWING THROUGH THE VENEER?

A common problem experienced when veneering is veneer adhesive and glue bleeding through the veneer. Unfortunately, this sometimes only shows up once the final coating is applied to the wood and then the whole piece of work is wasted and has to be discarded. A lot of wasted time and cost.

WHY DOES ADHESIVE SOAK THROUGH THE VENEER?

This problem occurs for a number of reasons.

The veneer is very open meaning the adhesive can come through the veneer very easily
Too much pressure is applied in the press making the adhesive
